About the GJTA
The Greater Johnstown Tennis Association (GJTA) is an organization committed to promoting tennis to all residents of the Greater Johnstown area. The GJTA attempts to coordinate fun yet competitive tennis league play for players of most skill levels in a social atmosphere.
Both men's and women's leagues are available, and each league is made up of four teams selected by designated team captains at the beginning of each season. A draft is held each season, and teams do not remain the same from year to year. The league is designed so that each team plays once per week (weather permitting) throughout the summer. At the conclusion of the 12-match season, playoffs are held to determine a league champion. Each team match is made up of individual singles and doubles matches with each individual match contributing to the overall team result. Individual players may only play once per team match, either in singles or doubles but not both. Team captains attempt to create team lineups so that the most skilled players play at the top position on the team while players of diminishing skill or experience play at each successive position until the roster is exhausted. This order often changes throughout the season based upon player availability or individual improvement, but the goal is to match each person up with a player on an opposing team of an approximately similar skill level.
Our intent is for each league member to get opportunities to play a variety of opponents without feeling significantly overmatched or undermatched. There is also an important social component to our league, and members are encouraged to stick around after their match to "cheer on" those still playing or get involved in a pick up match. In addition to league play, GJTA sponsors a Kickoff banquet at the beginning of each season and an Awards Banquet at the end, plus other closed tournaments and events.
